As a society, Gustafs Skål was formed in 1993 as a meeting place for 18th century friends, enthusiasts and those with a love of the 18th century that socialized in the same circles. Today, we have grown into a society of over 200 members in Sweden and abroad.
As an informative society we strive to preserve and keep the traditions and culture that developed during the 18th century alive. This applies to everyday customs like entertaining in the drawing room, dining, fashion, and the arts such as dance, music and socializing.
Many members cultivate special interests that are related to the 18th century. We practice the traditions of literature, music, clothing, theatrical history and cooking just to name a few. We honour the Swedish King, Gustaf III most of all. His reign (1772-1792) was a golden age in Swedish history and also a politically dramatic time. The societys name is taken from a Swedish song of tribute to his majesty King Gustaf III.
We celebrate the kings birthday on January the 24th, the day of his death on March 29th and the day of his coronation on the 19th of August.
Our Activities. We have a variety of activities that are intended for our own members and members of the public. Most of our activities are arranged by our own members. We can say that our activities rest on solid footing; parties, social gatherings in historical surroundings, courses, theatrical, social commitments and contact with other societies.
The parties that are arranged in historical surroundings are very important to members and guests. We attempt to bring the 18th century back to life with dances from the period and other practices that were typical of the time period, and we do it in clothing that is as period correct as possible.
The society often has regular activities like social gatherings, dancing lessons, lectures, and courses in locations that are connected to the 18th century. Some of our meetings are just for members and others are for everyone who is interested. We also arrange guided tours and trips to 18th century destinations, mainly for members.
One of the biggest interests within the society is 18th century clothing. We try to make reenactment clothing that is true to the period using period correct fabric, colors, patterns, sewing and tailoring. We study clothing, fashion prints, paintings and books on the subject, all with the ambition to reach the highest level of authenticity possible.
Our members are often engaged as 18th century extras in film and television shows, theatre productions and much more. We are even involved in dances and social gatherings. The society often acts as an intermediary for lectures and events.
There are many societies with the 18th century as their guiding light both inside and outside of Sweden. An important part of our function is to stay in contact with these sister groups. We search for new contacts all the time with other societies and appreciate receiving visitors and occasionally visiting other groups.
